Show Mandonelles earn sixth straight state title Bountiful High Schools Mandonelles Man-donelles repeated for the sixth time as state drill team champions cham-pions in competition held Feb. 15. Team instructor Jan Whittaker credits the team's success to "hard work, a good attitude from the girls, and great support from the parents." The team took first place honors in three of the judged categories including prop, military and dance. The Mandonelles Man-donelles took second place in state in novelty. The first place military routine featured 16 of the 23 team members performing to the MTV theme. The prop competition competi-tion showed the team's ver- satility as members performed with multi-colored 55-gallon drums. "We threw them, walked on them, rolled over them, manipulated ma-nipulated them in every way you can imagine," said Whittaker. The team's dance number was performed to an Aretha Franklin medley. The Mandonelles novelty performance per-formance lived up to its name as half of the team dressed as Carman Car-man Miranda including the big hat full of fruit and the other half dressed as gorillas and made their appearance out of eight foot bananas. They performed to the music "Hot, Hot, Hot." "The competition gets better and better every year. We feel lucky we did as well as we did," said Whittaker. She praised her team for their dedication which she said led to the repeat championship. The team practices three to four hours a day, six days a week. Four of those days begin at 6 a.m. The girls try out for a spot on the team in May and practice year-round with the exception of a six-week moratorium during the summer. Whittaker said the team is now preparing for national competition com-petition and will compete in Anaheim, Calif. April 4. They will perform their award-winning award-winning routines in front of the home crowd April 27, in a "Night to Remember" at the Bountiful High School Field House. i n A A r o p ' -' ' ' I I f- - 1 V . f i y S&JV -; mill IIH imiWir IHW J'-rlAfl4IftiaMfc -fc" :sV49BtHHW-' -flOHje- MHMmH .am.-"-..'mim This year's 3A State Drill Team Champions are the Bountiful High School Mandonelles.
