TT Spencer Mined top teachet 7 .:?jxavi-- By DONETA GATHERUM LAYTON - Mary Spencer, Lay-ton Lay-ton High college prep English and concurrent enrollment English teacher, tea-cher, has been named Teacher of the Month for January 1989. The Teacher of the Month is a new "program instituted at Layton High by the PTA. Selection is based on criteria developed by the stud-dents stud-dents which include understanding, understand-ing, respect for the students, willingness will-ingness to give extra help, ability to teach in such a way that students are interested and are therefore learning and shows she enjoys being a tea- member of the Wasatch Front International Education Consortium. Consor-tium. Ms. Spencer states, "As an edu-- edu-- cator I feel a strong obligation to keep abreast of current -ideas and advanced knowledge of the world in order to help students acquire skills which will help them academically aca-demically compete with students throughout the nation." ' . The Teacher of the Month recognition recog-nition was a great honor, Ms. Spencer Spen-cer stated, "because it comes from students' votes, and this is an especially espe-cially great wognition.i)ecause Layton High has such an outstand ing student body. For a teacher, there is no greater honor than to be recognized by the students that we're here to teach. " - . This student honor is a compan-" " ion to another student recognition award Ms. Spencer recently received. In May pf 1988, she was named by . Layton High School Alumni now attending Weber State College, as the "Most Influential Teacher" of 1988. Recipient of this award is selected by a survey asking students who now . attend Weber State to list the teacher who had most influenced their Eves. Selection is made by the students. stu-dents. . Ms. Spencer received a master of arts degree in English and literature from USU, graduating summa cum laude. She is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. She is the foreign exchange student advisor ad-visor at Layton High. She has traveled the world extensively exten-sively to South America and the Amazon River, the Soviet Union, the Middle East, Mexico, Scandinavia Scandin-avia and Europe and was granted general education research status in the People's Republic of China which included spending a summer studying in Tiber and Mongolia. The knowledge she has gained" through these travel and study experiences expe-riences is incorporated into her classroom teaching, making the learning experience very rich for the students. Because of this exceptionally excep-tionally broad background, Ms. Spencer is a member of the Davis School District team working with . the State Board of Education as a |
