Show J LBy Tom Haraldsen Signings, and rumors of signings, creating some eye-opening news It's that time of year again when, instead of wars and rumors of wars, we .have signings and rumors of signings. And with the state of athletics these . days, particularly on the professional level what's the difference between wars and signings? Nonetheless, here are some interesting tidbits to watch for, according to -my informed sources: Woods Cross High football standout Donovan Anderson will sign a let- Ssr of intent today to play football at the University of Texas-El Paso. An-erson An-erson was heavily recruited by the Air Force Academy as well, but decided de-cided to cast his lot with Miners. So, we'll be able to see him play in the WAC for four years. Another Wildcat football star, quarterback Todd Fuller, will sign today to play at Snow College next year. Fuller had a large impact on the fine Woods Cross football team that made it to the state quarterfinals this year, and he'll be a big asset to the Badger football program. Congratulations to both of these players. And if others out there are signing or aware of sign- . ing, let me know. tm My sources tell me the Utah Jazz are looking to make a trade scon, and here'&one possibility mat has surfaced: Bobby Hansen and Jose Ortiz to the Boston Celtics for Danny Ainge. " v - . What, you say? Before you write this one off, consider this: Boston wants Ortiz, and, along with Hansen, they can get two players for close to me same salary that they are paying Ainge. Ainge is very close to Jazz GM Dave Checketts, who would love to have the former BYU player. There's also a rumor that Ainge is ready to make a move. And the Jazz certainly wouldn't be hurt by making the move. This is all speculation, and there's no guarantee it will happen, but if it . does, remember you read it here first (I think.) And should the deal transpire, tran-spire, the next big question is, how will Jazz fans react? Ainge has usually beerrtreatedSerjrcoldljrin the Salt Palace, booed loudlyjit limes. It's no secret he usually shoots well here. But can die sometimes cruel and. non-understanding non-understanding Jazz fans handle it? After all, this group actually booed the BYU Cougarettes when they performed at halftime two weeks ago, even , before they performed. What will they do to a former Cougar player? 1 Ainge ina Jazz uniform. It might just happen..... ' -V Next Tuesday is Valentine's Day, or, as we call it at our house, Passover. It is also the last time the Region Four basketball teams will compete as a league. ' . - ' With next year's realignment, as everyone who cares knows, Viewmont and Davis head north, Bountiful and Woods Cross go to 3A and head south, and Highland and East head somewhere else. It's sort of sad, in a way, to see these rivalries dissolved. Wouldn't it be nice if someday we could have a league formed within our district, like other districts do? ; Maybe someday, we'll see such a logical realignment, especially if c . school boundaries are realigned within the district, as rumors have said v : they will be. Of course, maybe someday, the Valentines will begin arriving 'too...' .. . . t , , , , . ... ,r r.-f;. |
