Show I Holiday safety rules offered ; The Bountiful City Fire Department Depart-ment has offered the following safety rules that may prove helpful this holiday season. Use only lights that have been approved by the UL label. Check them for broken or cracked sockets, sock-ets, frayed wires or loose connections. connec-tions. Destroy them if they are unsafe. un-safe. Keep cords away from pets and children. Check labels of lights to see if they are to be used indoors or outdoors. out-doors. Fasten outdoor lights securely se-curely to protect them from wind damage. Always turn off lights on trees or other decorations when leaving home, even for a short time. Never use electric lights on metallic trees. Use colored spotlights spot-lights above or beside it, but never fastened to it. Always dispose of wrapping paper in garbage cans. Don't burn them in the fireplace, as they may suddenly ignite and cause a flash fire. Artificial trees (plastic) should have the UL label, as they can burn with extreme vigor. Shop for fresh trees. To check for freshness, look for a deep green color and the fresh scent of pine. Make sure the needles are pliable and do not fall easily from the tree. The trunk butt of a fresh tree should be sticky with sap. Place the tree away from all heat sources. Cut off the trunk about ab-out two inches and place in a sturdy, stur-dy, water holding stand. Keep the stand full of water. Remember, heated he-ated rooms dry the tree out quickly, and a dry tree is a fire hazard. Before lighting a fire in your fireplace, make sure the flue is open. Always keep the fireplace screen in place to confine embers and sparks. Never use lighted candles on a live tree or other evergreens. Always Al-ways use non-flammable candle holders. Keep candles where they cannot be knocked over. Avoid any decorations that have sharp edges or that can break easily. Don't purchase ornaments that resemble candy or food, as a small child may try to eat them. Even the safest people can still have fires in their home. The following fol-lowing is a list of things to do should a fire start in your home. If a fire should start, leave the house as fast as possible. Once outside out-side never go back inside a burning building. Have a family member call the fire department from the neighbor's house. If a fire is small enough, then a fire extinguisher can be used. The type and size recommended by the Bountiful City Fire Department is an ABC type and at least a 2'2 pound size. You should store at least one extinguisher on every level of your home. To complete the fire safety, a smoke detector should be installed on every level of your home. This detector should have a UL label and a test button to periodically check the batteries' performance. Bountiful City Fire Department is still offering a home fire safety inspection to the residents of Bountiful. Boun-tiful. This program enables the home owner to purchase a smoke detector at a local retailer for $2.99, the rest of the cost to be paid by the fire department after they have had the home inspection. To learn more about the program, prog-ram, or to schedule a time for a home inspection, call the fire station sta-tion at 298-6130 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Time is limited on the program prog-ram so call today. Plan for safety. Remember, there is no substitute for common sense. Look for and eliminate potential danger spots in your home at all times. The Bountiful City Fire Department De-partment will appreciate your help in making this a most joyous and fire safe Christmas season. |
