Davis favored in Region golf By TOM HARALDSEN Sports Editor SALT LAKE CITY Round-robin Round-robin champion Davis High is the prohibitive favorite to capture today's to-day's Region Four golf tournament, tourna-ment, being played at Bonneville Golf Course in Salt Lake City. The first foursomes were slated to tee off at 9 a.m. this morning. Top three finishers in the team standings after today's tournament, tourna-ment, as well as top individuals, advance to state. Leading the way for unbeaten Davis, which also captured the county tournament in late September, Septem-ber, are seniors Sean Turner and Alex Ward, and juniors David Summerhays and Chad Pettingill. Junior Matt Lyons will also represent repre-sent the Darts, while the sixth golfer gol-fer on the region entry will either be Ron Olsen or Loren Mansell. Davis had an outstanding chance to win state this season, boasting one of the strongest teams in recent history, his-tory, Meanwhile, all five other region entries honestly feel they have a chance to earn a state berth. Pacing Bountiful's chances will ' be seniors Dirk Anderson, Chris Anger and Travis Forbush, juniors Jeff Hoster and Mike Affleck, and sophomore Ryan Budge. Viewmont enters today's tournament tour-nament with some momentum after af-ter beating East in sudden death last week on this same course. Leading the Vikings will be seniors Mark Walker, Kyle Owen, Wade Tingey, Collin Christiansen, Matt Clark and sophomore Shane Culli-more. Culli-more. And Woods Cross, despite a 1-9 dual record which included several close losses, feels good about its chances with senior Justin Shaw, juniors Matt Hardy, Evan Morrison Morri-son and Mark Robinson, and sophomores soph-omores Matthew Shaw and Shane Rawlings. . The public is welcome to attend today's tournament. The state tournament will be conducted at this same course next Wednesday. |
