Show 2 Mgflnxss Teacher honored by IBM Teresa Talbot, math and algebra prep teacher at Bountiful Junior High has been named Utah's Teacher of the Year in a contest sponsored by IBM through the magazine "Classroom Computer Learning." The 52 semi-finalists in this contest, one from each state, one i from the District of Columbia and one from Puerto Rico or Guam were selected on the basis of their use of computer technology to enhance teaching methods. From the semi- ; finalists twelve regional finalists will be selected and the nation- wide Teacher of the Year will be chosen from among these 12 . and announced June 17. Mrs. Talbot has designed a computer program which in essence ess-ence makes the computer an electronic blackboard. By demon- ' strating math problems on her computer screen in front of a class of 30-odd students, she gives the entire class computer ; access. Mrs. Talbot received her training at a program at Weber State College designed to help junior high and middle school J teachers use computers to teach math. 1 According to Information-Technology Supervisor Steve Cot-trell, Cot-trell, Mrs. Talbot is the kind of dedicated teacher who works not only with her own students, but assists others to teach as well. For example, she has written a program for the Bountiful Junior High librarian to catalogue books and works with Chris Wahl-quist Wahl-quist at the district office to design programs for the gifted and talented. Her prize as Utah's Teacher of the Year is a new IBM computer compu-ter for her classroom fully equipped with software. The National Nation-al Teacher of the Year will receive for his-her school a fully equipped networked computer lab plus a trip for two to Washington, D.C. to be honored nationally in a special awards ceremony in August. |
