"The World is a Ghetto" War United Artists Records by RICHARD BARNUM-REECE Chronicle Staff When the Chronicle Entertainment En-tertainment editor gave me this record to review he said the critics were going berserk about it. Strike one. I calculated that the overwhelming over-whelming acceptance of anything by the critics was in and of itself cause for the immediate rejection of the record, Never-the-less, I consented to listen to it before I wrote the review. Professional ethics often are messy business for nhf Jnutfansit t0 "'Profession. I packed the record home and put it on the stereo component. Still I knew that before the plastic wrapper was broken that the review for "The world is a ghetto" bY War was going to be devastating. As long as I can be a free and easy student I consider it important to flaunt the freedom of negation. Who likes New York critics anyway? I lose. This record is insinuating. It's an out and out super fine record. Although my prejudices run to' Dylan, Steve Stills, Rita Cooledge, Steve Miller Band, Nillson, Richie Havens and Judy Collins, I now count "War" as part of my repetoire. I say "my repertoire", because to truly listen to music one must hear" it. I am of the school which believes that music cannot be heard unless the volume is on full scream, the windows are open to acquaint the neighbors with the spirituality of good music and the listener is on his feet running, jumping and pirouetting through the house in some semblance of rhythm to the music. It can be documented that "The World is a Ghetto," is especially conducive to the above musical rite. War is composed of six black men and a token white man. Their sound is loaded with drums (especially the Congo), alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones, clarinets, guitars, and an organ which plays a large part in the unique quality of their sound; a genius on harmonica who blows ethereal and deamoniac; and some fine vocals by Howard Scott, B.B. Dickerson, Lonnie Jordan, Harold Brown, Papa Dee Allen, Charles Miller, and Lee Oskar. Somewhere in the midst of that menage of vocalists is a dude who can do things with a voice which cannot cross state lines because of riot incitement. Very fine. When the above seven do sing en masse the sound of an outraged boys glee club is approximated. The coordinate implementation of the Congo, harmonica, and organ contribute to the success of this album. But there is also the free use of a heavy sax sound which gives "war" a "big band" volume which they pull off with room to spare. The final result is a heavy beat sound which is easy to "got into."
