Show Letters to the Editor I ask you, is this the kind of man we want in the highest office of American government, a man who must resort to name calling and slander as a means of defense? T. Rogers Roth Editor's Note: Our editorial made no allegations. The Chronicle quoted the Washington Post, whose charges have been substantiated sub-stantiated by the FBI. Many of the slogans used are those being used in the campaign for George McGovern. And finally, as has been reported by most national media, George McGovern has injected "a new lowness" into the American political campaign. The charge was made in response to comparisons made by McGovern of Nixon to Hitler and the Republican Party to the Ku Klux Klan. As a solution which will remedy this slipping away of individual responsibility we are announcing the formation of a Vigilance Committee for the Summary Conviction and Punishment of Political Wrongdoers. Our committee com-mittee will support a movement to place Watergate on the ballot in November election as a referendum issue for the people to decide. We appeal to all reasonable concerned and sensitive citizens to join our cause. The facts have been made clear by the newspapers and we must take justice into our own hands now, bypassing the outmoded out-moded and corrupt relics of ineffectual adjudication our system is shackled with, if we are to save America before it is too late. Brent Garfield Bill Toone Exaggeration Editor: This is written in response your editorial "Election Methods: Testing one, two" appearing in the Chronicle of Oct. 12. As is usual of the Chronicle, the article is a gross exaggeration. You insinuated several times McGovern campaign. The General Accounting Office has recently referred three violations of the campaign spending law by McGovern fund raisers to the Department of Justice. The violations concerned contributions from Hugh Hefner and General Motors heir , Stewart Mott, money obtained at a McGovern rally in Madison Square Garden, a violation of the British committee Americans Abroad for McGovern and a violation of the law by the Committee to Elect McGovern-Schriver. McGovern-Schriver. The GAO said it found many other instances of inadequate bookkeeping that might require similar action. Now turning to the Chronicle allegation that the CRP "planted agent provocateurs" at the national party conventions. Though I cannot speak for the Democratic convention first hand, I attended the GOP convention and see no basis for such a charge. I had many encounters with the some 3,500 demonstrators as they tried to convention business. They tried to hinder us from carrying on icepicked tires, roughed up delegates and CRP members as well as innocent convention spectators. Nanette Pederson OUTREACH Chairman Vigilance Editor: As "reasonably concerned, sensitive citizens" we wish to join with those who have expressed disgust over the appalling apathy demonstrated by the American people in regard to the activities of the Committee for the Re-election of the President. The enigmatic failure of Americans to respond to the onesided one-sided Democratic charges of wrongdoing indicates convincingly that we have degenerated into a nation of sheep. Even more shocking shock-ing is the willingness with which the complacent public has relegated rele-gated its investigative and judicial power to such dubious FBI, Department De-partment of Justice and the U.S. courts. As of yet, conclusive proof is yet to be found. Republican leaders deny official linkage with the Committee Com-mittee for the Re-election of the President. I questioned very seriously seri-ously McGovern's campaign ethics if he must resort to fabricating espionage plots to win the election. Let us examine briefly the financial inconsistencies of the |
