Show Nixon winding down war: Incredible lie, says Scheer .: " 'i X - Y.';l . - ' IT' ft- r-mnm.. W- . ji . by REX NUTTING Chroncile Staff "I'm here to challenge the students on the deal they've made with Nixon on the war. I don't think they care how many Vietnamese are killed as long as they aren't drafted," explained Robert Scheer, former editor of "Ramparts" magazine. maga-zine. Mr. Scheer will appear Monday in the Union East Ballroom at noon. He will also appear at the production of Millhouse at the Capitol Theatre at 8 p.m. "I'm going to speak on the question of Nixon supposedly winding down the war. It's a credible lie," said Mr. Scheer. "The ceasefire proposal is really a proposal for surrender. The Vietnamese are still waiting for the elections of the Geneva Accords." Mr. Scheer charges that Nixon "expects the other side to accept a military solution without a political one. But the Vietnamese went through the same thing after they beat the French; they won't let it happen again." There's only one way to end the war, says Scheer, and that way is to accpet the seven-point peace plan of the communists. "McGovern is the peace candidate; he knows how to end the war. Nixon is the war candidate." Mr. Scheer has traveled extensively ex-tensively in Vietnam, Korea and China. He was the first American to visit China after the Cultural Revolution. He believes that the culture of Asia has "become an abstraction. Either the Indochinese people don't exist, or they are inferior." "But through my travels, I've noticed that they have a superior culture. They are more warm, more loving. They believe in something; that's why they can fight against the odds," commented Mr. Scheer. "I don't want anybody to get the idea that I'm pessimistic about the world. I'm very optimistic. When Americans begin traveling to China, they'll realize that we don't have a monopoly on all the developments in civilization. Other cultures are solving the same problems we are in different ways." "I think it's exciting that the Chinese can live their entire lives without the need for underarm deoderant. Their lives are stimulating and sensual." Culture and race will be Mr. Scheer's main topics; he believes that racism is the cause of the apathy that ignores 20,000 Vietnamese Viet-namese casualties in one week because there were no American casualties, in Pat Nixon's words, "no casualties." "The Vietnamese people are the Jews of the modern world," said Scheer, "and I'm not going to be a good German about it." Every argument, every rationality of the war has been proved wrong by the Pentagon Papers, according to Scheer. He recalled a debate he had in Salt Lake six years ago with Sen. Gale McGee and Sen. Wallace Bennett. They claimed that international in-ternational communism was the reason for U.S. involvement. "Now, this has been shown false by the Pentagon Papers. The war has never been at a more ludicrous point," charged Mr. Scheer. "Nixon now tells us that we should live in peace with the two major communist powers, but that North Vietnam, with 20 million, poses a threat to America." "We say that POWs never ha ve a nice day, but the North Vietnamese never have a nice day, with the bombing. Why can't we just live in peace with the Vietnamese people?" peo-ple?" Robert Scheer will also appear at Coffee and Politics Tuesday at 9:55 in the Caucus Room in OSH. Robert Scheer ... calls Nixon a credible liar. |
