Show Utah, ASUin crucial WA C game by GARY LESSER Chronicle Staff The University football team puts its Western Athletic Conference title ti-tle hopes on the line Saturday, as they travel to Tempe to take on'the once invincible Arizona State powerhouse. pow-erhouse. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. (MDT) kickoff, and will be broadcast over the University sports network, beginning with the pre-game show at 7:10. Utah head coach Bill Meek, still beaming over last week's 39-20 win over the University of Texas-El Paso, says of the Sun Devils: "The fact that they lost a game to Wyoming only proves that they aren't totally infallible, but that loss didn't take away their awesome speed. ..what it may have done is to make them a lot more determined not to lose another game." Apparently upset over their loss, ASU last Saturday showed no mercy on Oregon State, as they held the Beavers to only one yard rushing and sacked the quarterback 17 times. Their defense is clearly tenacious, and they also have the WAC's premier running back in Woody Green, who has averaged seven and one-half yards per rush, and is the Sun Devils' leading scorer with 48 points. But the Utes have gotten themselves in gear now, and they should not be counted out. Running back Gene Belczyk finally broke loose, and quarterback Don Van Galder had another one of his good games. Steve Odom, a threat any time he gets the ball, helps to convince one oddsmaker to favor Utah. Others pick ASU by up to 17 points, so whomever you are for, the games shapes up as a good one. |
