Show 'Women 's lib human cause' by JOAN IM WONG Chronicle Staff Wilma Scott Heide, enlightening, informative and a new hope for women discussed equality problems with a group of women in a rap session Thursday. Mrs. Heide is not the Germaine Greer type libber. She is middle-aged, middle-aged, has a family, writes and is working on her Ph.D. in sociology and psychology. She defines the women's liberation movement as "a serious and human movement. Women in their public and private lives should be able to show their talents. There will be a change of value systems, new sex roles and no stereotyping. The movement will provide a choice for women, men and children in this society." America pretends to be a democracy, which it is not because of the many discriminations confined to women, she continued. "With the mutual support of men and women's organizations such as National Organization of Women (NOW), the brotherhood of man will be the sisterhood of woman. Mrs. Heide can see where the federal courts will eventually strike down state legislation which discriminates against women, such as abortion. By then, with all the public officials so bogged down with processing p the cases, they will realize it's not II, their business any more. On militant women's organizations, she said, "being " militant should serve a function, ' .and there is justification for being ' militant, as being oppressed is ' 1 painful." She feels that in the home there should be a redesignation of jobs or K alternatives, where even the male may take the house-husband role if the situation sees fit. "We don't like to see men die younger than we, we don't like statistics that show they commit suicide three times as often, or that they take drugs and alcohol as much as we," she said. If need be, the male should be the civil libertarian, she said. As such the society as a whole does not recognize the need for a movement, but sexism is a social disease and adversaries must be made aware of the need and that the movement is and has been for many years. |
