Show International BELFAST (UPI) A submachinegun assassination of a father of eight and a runaway bus took two more lives Tuesday and pushed the toll of three years of violence in Northern Ireland close to the 600 mark. National WASHINGTON (UPI) The Supreme Court upheld a lower court ruling Tuesday which declared it unconstitutional for a state to pay direct subsidies to parents of nonpublic school children. The justices also refused to reconsider their sweeping decision of June that the death penalty as practiced in the United States is "cruel and unusual punishment"- banned by the Constitution. WASHINGTON (UPI) By a 10-vote margin, the Senate refused re-fused Tuesday to choke off a filibuster and force a vote on a bill that would sharply curb busing of school children to achieve integration. WASHINGTON (UPI) Three Utah mines among 122 coal mines designated as the most "potentially hazardous" are undergoing under-going daily inspections for at least three months. The designation and inspection order came from the Bureau of Mines. An official in Utah said the state's mines affected are Sunny-side Sunny-side No. I of Kaiser Steel Corp. at Sunyside, and the Beehive and Deseret Mines of American Coal in Orangeville. |
