Show aitr ' Step by step the med student becomes a doctor Mrs. Garlington, House Staff Administrator for the programs (from the University Medical Center) Cen-ter) said; "Our program is still young enough to suffice for the more personal needs of the staff. We are not as specialized as other training programs, yet we are the major referal area for seven inter-mountain inter-mountain states." Mrs. Garlington concluded by saying that any member mem-ber of the house staff need only go around the corner to find the medical medi-cal supervision needed to aid them in their particular need areas. 1: By JOANN MAGGIO Chronicle Staff S, E- j;- "The training of a doctor is the 0Ii; training of a mystique" said one r doctor at the University Hospital. i;. The medical school program is an ;. "in depth" study of the basic medi-J(i medi-J(i cal sciences. Medical students study biology, biochemistry, phys- iology and the practical application applica-tion of these sciences. EThe medical student is trained to recognize the problem of disease 1 and understand the "biology of disease", said one of the Univer- sity's medical students. "A coming - to understand yourself in the medi-jjj medi-jjj cal context", said another student. J The first four years are an "intro-J "intro-J duction to the art of doctor-patient 1 relationships." A medical student i must be socialized in his ability to 1 communicate problems and the in- formation relating to particular problems. Wusf learn methods p The medical student must learn 'V the methods of finding the necessary neces-sary information to analyze and diagnose the patient's problems, u with consideration for both the )1 patient's history and his symptoms. The first two years is an orienta-i orienta-i tion in the classroom, leading to-iflll to-iflll ward two years of closely guarded and supervised hospital experience. The two years of hospital experience experi-ence is primarily concerned with the student's abilities to make .(diagnosis, and utilize the tools of Hps profession. I 1 Step number two in the making of a doctor is internship. The doctor doc-tor is now ready to apply principles of his training. The major function func-tion is the development of a critical approach to therapy. Interns learn to quickly asess the information necessary to act on. They must critically organize a large amount of data concerning an individual patient, so as to define in a concise, communicable, and workable fashion the nature of the patient's problems. The intern begins be-gins his personal performance in caring for patients on a personal basis, using his abilities to make valid decisions. The intern program is on a rotation basis. There is a great deal of "ward training", and primary patient care in the hospitals which open themselves to a University Univer-sity intern. In Salt Lake City, the LDS Hospital, Hos-pital, the Veterans Hospital and the University Medical Center cover the permiter of Utahs intern rotations. The intern may choose one month of elective, and then is assigned two months of neurology, one month emergency room and a two week vacation. The atmosphere is that of intense pressure. An intern compared it with that of the "front lines in Vietnam," with twice the responsibility. Responsibility increases The responsibility increases in the training program. The resident, the next step in training, has the major responsibility of "wards". He is the adviser for both the stu dents on the wards and the interns. He must pay particular attention to the continuing educational atmosphere atmo-sphere of the students he is assigned. as-signed. The resident is counseled by doctors and acts as a guide for the interns in therapeudic decisions, deci-sions, to insure the best possible care for the patients. Concentrated medical knowledge The specifics of management have now been colored in. It is time for the consideration of a concentrated concen-trated body of medical knowledge-"Specialty knowledge-"Specialty Training." This consists of specialized training in a particular parti-cular aspect of medicine. Examples of this specialization are surgery of the heart or brain, or the special ized knowledge involved in handling hand-ling medical problems related to the kidneys, or the lungs. Three months training At least three months of training train-ing in a speciality field is "expected" "expect-ed" of people who persue a fellowship fellow-ship approach in their training. The specialty training is necessary to balance the diverse training rec-cieved rec-cieved in the hospital experience. It fulfills the demands for skilled medical care in America. With the increasing body of specialized knowledge, the specialized training programs aid doctors in "keeping up" with the most recent and most valid modes of diagnosis and therapy. Physicians are coming to rely upon group practices, with each individual doctor being somewhat some-what more able to handle the specialty spec-ialty he is most involved in. |
