Show the album kind of sounded like it. This album is the same kind of stuff but much more musical and refined. The New Riders of the Purple Sage, and excellent country band help out on instrumentation. Arrangements and production are superb. "Jesus Crist, Superstar" (Decca): By now there is probably little doubt that this work is probably one of the most potent forces in shaping the destiny of pop. The two-record set from the opera portrays the New Testament in "the language of today," as the ad says. Christ is portrayed as being mortal mor-tal in all respects-an anti-hero. The music throughout is no less than superb. Rock, jazz and classical sounds are brought together gracefully by the Grease Band, Quartermass, plus a long list of rock musicians. The album is predominantly rock, held together by The LP includes "Brooklyn Roads" and "Shilo." 'Tap Root Manuscript" is his latest effort which includes "Cracklin' Rosie" and "He Ain't Heavy." Side two is called the African Trilogy-a Folk Ballet. On the liner notes Diamond Dia-mond writes: "When rhythm and blues lost its sensuality for me I fell in love with a woman named gospel. We net secretly in the churchs of Harlem, and made love at revival meetings in Mississippi. And loving her as I did, I found a great yearning to know her roots. And I found them. And they were in Africa. And they left me breathless. I can't begin, to convey what his music did to me. If you don't buy another album all year, scarf up on this one. r moi BY STEVE POULSON Entertainment Editor Jlg GUY-WELLS CONCERT liggest gig this weekend is hap-QSUfiing hap-QSUfiing Saturday night in the bon Ballroom. King says, "the young s who are gonna have "to carry " Their blues is much freer n its older, more rigid forms. y originally comes from Loui-ia; Loui-ia; Wells grew up in Memphis 1 learned "harp" from Junior Ian Gillian, Deep Purple's lead singer, who plays the role of Jesus Christ. 'The Best Of Gordon Lightfoot" (United Artists): Speaking of great songwriters, this album is Gordon Lighfoot's best efforts. Lightfoots , back-up guitarists are very fine. The album includes "Early Momin'Rain," and "For Lovin' Me," among others-needless others-needless to say a helluvan album. "Velvet Gloves and Spit" and "Tap Root Manuscript"-Neil Diamond (Uni): "Velvet.." has just been re-released, I think Maybe this album will get some of the attention it deserves there's not a weak cut on the album. Diamond's songs are consistently superb-both lyrically and musically. ma raiiu aim me arreei LJioir Van Morrison (Warner Bros.): Listen to this album about three times and you won't be able to bring yourself away from it. Van Morrison's kind of art sneaks up on you-its a funky album. Back-up varies from a couple guitars to a beg band sound. It includes his single, "Domino." "Christmas and the Beads of Sweat"-Laura Nyro (Columbia): This, her latest album, features a lot more back-up and production than her previous pre-vious stuff; a lot more drums and bass. Words and musical patterns are predictably pre-dictably superb and unconventional. The LP is produced by Arif Mardin and Flix Cavaliere. ker. 3uy, on guitar, and Wells on p and vocals, have been travel-I travel-I with a four-piece back-up id.
