Show Chicano Week to focus on educational flaws "The drop-out rate of Mexican Americans in education is around 66 percent and the educational system continually goes on thinking think-ing that through educating the norm they are doing a good job," said Mr. Fred Le Bianc, a University Uni-versity Chicano advisor. Mr. Le Bianc said the University Uni-versity is doing a good job, but educating students in English from a Spanish background creates many problems. "The biggest problem for a student coming out of the Chicano community into the University," Uni-versity," Mr. Le Bianc said, "would be that of not having the financial assistance that he would need to pay for a college education. educa-tion. At this time it would also be of utmost importance if we could get an awareness in education to all educators around the needs of bi-cultural and bi-lingual education educa-tion starting at grade K and moving through the University." Mr. Le Bianc said the purpose of the three day program centered on Chicano speakers and talent is to develop better communication and understanding between the two communities and to bring about a greater understanding of the special educational problems and needs of the Chicano student and Chicano community. He said, "there are approximately approxi-mately 50,000 Chican people in' the valley and only 120 are going to the University. There is a big problem somewhere." |
