Show LEGION BALL CLUB MAKES NEVADA TRIP By Al AbUtt The American Legion team invaded Nevada and like Caesar of old, they came, they saw, they conquered. 'We left Bingham at the early hour of 3 a.m. Had breakfast in Wendover at 5:30 then proceeded proceed-ed down the Steptoe valley to McGill. There the boys were put up at the Legion Hall. The kids, had taken their own blankets and the McGill Legion furnished furnish-ed nice cots and mattresses. Like good G I's they made up their bunks and then went into Ely for lunch. Back to McGill and swimming. Don't think they got much rest, but come game time and you would have never known it because they played like big leaugers. They took McGill 15 to 2. Ross Oseguera pitched a ; masterful game, never in trou-! trou-! ble until the last inning when he tired just a little to give them a run. Robertson with a home run, double and single and Harold Har-old Yates with four base hits were the big guns at the plate. Yet everyone on the team chipped chip-ped in and they, fielded like pros. The Kennecott Co. treated them to dinner and a real dinner din-ner it was. McGill has a beauti-' beauti-' ful ball park and it was packed for the game. Those Nevada people sure go for their kids. Stayed in McGill Saturday night and Sunday traveled to Ruth. Saw the pit and the new Ruth townsite, then went to the ball park and took the Ruth team 9 to 0 with Stillman pitching pitch-ing like a veteran and Sonny Robertson again hitting one over the fence. Left there about 3:00 p.m. and headed for home, arriving ar-riving at about 9:00 o'clock a tired but happy bunch of kids. Game Notes-Johnny Notes-Johnny Tangaro, Bill Wilson, DelMar Schick and your writer drove. The people of this community com-munity can realize what a job John, Bill and DelMar are doing for these kids. John and Bill took care of all the details and DelMar coaches. The team went big league all the way. Want to take this opportunity of thanking the good people of those two Nevada towns on the treatment we received. Just After Sonny Robertson doubled doubl-ed and then hit one over they walked him twice. Oseguera had good control and he was around the plate all the time. Same with Stillman at Ruth. The two Nevada teams were a bit tired, they had just battled bat-tled each other in a three-game playoff for a berth in the state tournament. McGill won. Russell Rus-sell Gust, a former Bingham boy, coaches at McGill. Doing a great job. Ruth has a 15-year old catcher that is a comer. Bobby Gardner has all the actions and a great arm. Just hope I can make the trip next yeV. |
