Show John Birch leader to speak at U The Artists and Speakers Committee Com-mittee will present Mr. Robert Welch, founder of the John Birch Society, on January 14 at 8:00 p.m. in the Union Ballroom. Born December 1, 1899, Mr. Welch entered the University of North Carolina at the age of 12. He graduated with his bachelor's degree at age sixteen and then continued his studies at the United States Naval Academy and Harvard Law School. Seemingly well educated, Mr. Welch tends to down-grade his formal education, placing more value on forty years in the what he calls "the school of hard knocks." Mr. Welch was for many years the vice president in charge of sales and advertising for a large candy manufacturing firm, but in 1957 he gave up most of his business busi-ness involvement to devote more time to political activities, which included the founding of the John Birch Society in December, 1958. Mr. Welch has spent a great deal of his time traveling. He has made two trips to England to study the effects of the socialist government, govern-ment, and one trip around the world. |
