Show Letter Manipulation Editor; Dr. Jack Hexter of Yale as quoted in the Oct. 29 Chronicle and Tribune personifies much of what is wrong with American education. edu-cation. He states, "It is not the duty of the faculty to provide the education the students want but what the community and future require." It is this manipulative attitude which is being questioned by today's to-day's students. We do not want to be forged into replacement parts for the preconceived future machinery ma-chinery of the Dr. Hexters, Strangeloves and Max Raffertys. Dr. Hexter also condescendingly condescend-ingly states that "very few students stu-dents between 17 and 21 know what they want." I think they do know what they want. They may not have chosen a life's work or an academic major, but this is different dif-ferent from knowing what you want. A teacher's duty is only to open as many possibilities to the student as he knows how. ROGER MANWARING |
