LaFlamme, who also sings '4 and writes music, eventually j. found an organist, a female voca-j; voca-j; list, a drummer, a guitarist and a t bass player to fit his unheard of concept of music, i A blend of classical, folk and ' rock, the sum of their music is greater than its parts. Without any stylistic guidelines, the group is free to experiment. It's a Beautiful Beauti-ful Day's first album, which was released last summer, is a masterpiece. master-piece. "One of the least fashionable and most talented pop groups around is the Youngbloods," so says the N.Y. Times. The Youngbloods had been in hibernation for over a year, having regrouped as a trio and relocating to San Francisco from New York. When they finally emerged, it was with their latest LP, "Elephant Mountain"-one of the year's most uniquely beautiful albums. The nucleus of the group is Jesse Colin Young-the singer and bass player responsible for the continued on page 6 the new musi continued from page 5 Youngblood's soft-spoken and lyrical vocals. Joe Bauer, the group's drummer, drum-mer, was originally conned into his position while looking for work as a jazz drummer. He discovered, dis-covered, however, that their music had evolved into something he could no longer pigeon-hole as rock and roll, and became totally interested in the possibilities for development. A freak named Banana is responsible re-sponsible for the Youngblood's in-genius in-genius musical patterns. A onetime one-time classical pianist, he has mastered mas-tered guitar and bluegrass banjo as well.
