Show U should be involved in industrial growth It's not surprising that University President James C. Fletcher is serving on Gov. Calvin Rampton's Industrial Development De-velopment Advisory Committee which holds its second meeting Friday at the University. The University is undoubtedly as important to Utah s hopes for more industry and a growing economy as any other single factor. It is widely concluded that to move ahead, Utah must attract "soft" industry-research, product development and technology. It is for this type of activity that Utah, a state with a high percentage of high school and college graduates, has an available work force. Our chief marketable commodity is brainpower. The University has already taken steps to build research industry. In fact, last year federal research grants to the University Uni-versity totaled $25 million and state and local tax revenues generated from this expenditure were estimated as high as $4 million. The research park and industrial associates program, as well as the work of the Divisions for Economic Development and Research and Industrial Development and Research also show demonstrate the University's efforts toward and concern con-cern with development in the state. And the University has a right good reason to be concerned. con-cerned. At the root of its financial problems, high tuition, and low faculty salaries is simple inablity of the state to raise the revenue in the first place. So the task is an important.one-and the University's invol-vment invol-vment should continue. ' |
