What does he or she do when that last bell of the day rings? Maybe he works in a grocery store to earn a few extra dollars or maybe he works in a store downtown. Maybe the girl is a secretary or a nurse. But if that guy next to you is Bill Collar. He is a Salt Lake City policeman, one of about 50 officers in the department currently working and going to school. The shift starts at 11 p.m. Bill doesn't know what lies ahead for him in the next eight hours. "Disnatcher. car two is 10-41, continued. "I was stationed at Ft. Belvoir in Washington, D.C. There was a chance for a post in Hawaii. I slipped my sergeant a box of cigars and was on my way." His conversation was interrupted by a call from the dispatcher. "Car two-9-31, barking dog, all the neighbors are complaing," the dispatcher explained. The address was given and the officer rolled towards his first call of the night. A Barking Dog "Never anticipate a call, until you get to the scene," Bill said "The dispatcher may dispatch it one way and by the time you get to the scene it could be an entirely different situation." Inside the house he talked to a woman and three frightened teenage girls. The woman had been out of the house and the three girls had been left home alone. They told of seeing a strange man look in the windows and tamper with the car. Instead of calling the police immediately, n . in terror for to be a counselor. After listening to the hostess for a few minutes, Bill returned to his earlier conversation, "So when I got to Hawaii I served in the MP's and when I got out I worked as a hotel detective for awhile at one of the big hotels in Hawaii-that's where I met my wife, Dee. "Dee's a Utah girl and we returned to Utah and started going to school at BYU. I worked part time for the Security Department. When I transferred to the University I again worked for their 10-8," he laid the mike back on the dash and pulled out of the parking lot toward his district. The 26-year-old officer was graduated from the last training class. But unlike most of his chohorts, Bill has already racked up six years of police experience. As the radio chattered in the background he explained how he got his start. Enlisted In Army "I enlisted in the Army when I was 18. They gave me three choices. My middle one was the Military Police. I envisioned one of those guys standing at the edge of the battlefront directing traffic towards the war. Needless to say I was put in the MP's and later found out what they really did. "I guess you could say a box of cigars changed my life," he "Sam" was barking. As the patrol car pulled to the curb a lady was just getting out of a car in front of her house. She pretended not to see the officer approach but continued to look over her shoulder. The situation was explained to her and also what the consequences would be if the barking continued. The lady agreed to keep the dog inside. "I hate yappers!" Bill exclaimed as he climbed back into the patrol car. He opened his brief case and thumbed through a number of reports until he found the proper form and filled it out. The assignment completed he picked the mike up from the dash and reported in. No sooner had he put the mike back on the dash he was sent on a car prowl. tne mree sat imuu. ... over two hours until the mother returned. "We sat together on the couch with all the lights out holding a butcher knife between us," they told the officer. "We were too scared to do anything. We just waited," they said. All he could do is tell the mother and girls not to wait the next time and fill out a report. Time For Lunch The time was now 3 a.m. --time for a lunch break. Inside a deserted restaurant the hostess was crying. The young blond was having boyfriend trouble and wanted to get rid of him, but the guy was the persistent type. A policeman must have many talents and at this moment he had Security Department for about nine months before joining the city force." When Bill returned to the car, the dispatcher said, "What cars can assist Car 31 with two burglars inside a building?" Bill was on liis way without a moment's hesitation. He was only a few blocks away. Building Surrounded The building was surrounded. "Be careful," someone said, "I heard something in there." The officers entered the building. Bill explained, "You have your gun out and you start searching f through the building. You open ; doors and you don't know what e you will find on the other side, ; -thaybe the burglars."
