Show Voice of the People Exibitionism Editor: "With stoic anticipation the tender blade prepared to be trampled like so many of his brothers and sisters had been in the many days before. There were already many expedient paths on the campus, where his kind had become all but extinct." "It would only be a matter of time until he too returned to the soil. He hadn't even reached his third birthday . . . only three more weeks and it would be three years since he had started out as a sprout. Death seemed imminently close." Hector died before I could finish his tragic story, and so I decided to take up the fight in which he gave his very last drop of chlorophyl. Students, stay off the grass. There is more to consider than getting where you are going in the shortest time possible. By trampling the grass you set the stage for erosion, deprive lovers of future years precious square feet and detract from the overall beauty of this campus. U of U engineers, remember that the only beauty a sidewalk can have is function; and build new ones where the muddied makeshift paths show an obvious need. Michael S. Robinson Drug Store Cowboys Editor: ff Who are the people shooting ott their mouths about Johnsons enlargement of Arches and Capitol Reef monuments? Well one groups is that bunch of loudmouthed self-righteous drug tore cowboys in Spanish dancing boots who refer to themselves as or "stockmen or "ranchers." Ask one of these Lincoln Continental cowboys about the rights and responsibilities of ownership and you will be treated to something like this: "Let me tell all you nigger lovin' riot inciting atheistical commie eastern homo Jew liberals that private property is an inalienable right given to American cattlemen, American stockmen and American ranchers by God Almighty, and you better not let me catch any of you on MY land or in the water of MY stream, you dirty eaters of Mexican beef and New Zealand lamb." Yet what does this same man say about Johnson's change in policy governing the disposition of federally owned lands? You guessed it: "Those nigger lovin' riot inciting atheistical commie eastern homo Jew liberal politicians got no right to throw me off their lands!" It is not surprising that newspaper editors and university professors have expressed their hot indignation about Johnson's "high-handedness." They are on safe ground, for their arguments are based on money, and, as it says on the masthead of one of our local tabloids: "We believe the dollar bill to be divinely inspired." John Nelson Hail Utahnas! Editor: This is a letter of appreciation for the fine performance and display of talent that was exhibited by the Utahnas as they performed twice in Arizona. Their presence and performance at the ASU game Thursday night thrilled the fans and almost inspired the team to victory. But their finest hour came Friday night as they marched at half-time at the Phoenix Suns-Chicago Bulls professional game. The 6,212 fans were overwhelmingly surprised b the precision and exactness of the gals from Utah. Truly it was a fine hour for the University and the Utah alums in the area. Whoever is responsible for the trip down here of the Utahnas should be thanked many fold. Some of the comments at Friday's game were: "Best . half-time show yet in the . colliseum." "Wow, did you see those high kicks?" "Man, they are " all great!" D.R. Ashton, USAF Swidewalk Plea Editor: Now do we really have to put up with a FIVE PART piece of exhibitionism from Mr. Keith Moore, "published (hooray for him) in Pen, Utah Sings (in what?) and Western Humanities Review?" Has this guy really conned you into it? Good grief. Isn't it obvious from what he published today that he is a disgruntled, largely unpublished, drop-out with a strong grudge that he rationalizes against the whole university establishment (as he sees it) that has supposedly stood between him and the muse, not to speak of between him and any kind of gratifying publication. Do you staffers who take English courses really find that all professors are as Moore says? Really? Look--he's been writing half-baked, crybaby, namecalling, logically-fallacious, egotistical pieces like this for a long time, as anyone knows who has been around more than a couple of years. Maybe he is a lonely suffering genius OK, so be it but do we all have to suffer with him. Patty Preston |
