The Utes will be looking their first victory of the season. Coach Pete Carlston's cross country team will travel to Pullman, Wash., Saturday for a meet with the Washington State Cougars at 11 a.m. Making up the squad for this week's contest will be Greg Baldwin, Randy Doyle, Gerry Walker, Randy Bauer, Pete Meldrum, Mike Roberts and Al Seeley. The runners were chosen by their performance in last week's meet. The first six Utes to finish earned traveling rights, and run-off among three other harriers produced the seventh member of the squad. The Redskins are coming off a losing, but nevertheless, solid effort against Oregon State. The Beavers took the contest 27 to 28, but strong performances by Al Seeley, who placed second, and others were encouraging. Coach Carlston expects the Cougars to provide stiff competition. He says, "Washington State has had a history of fine runners." Probably the most prominent is ex-Olympic hopeful Gerry Lindgren. However, it is very doubtful that Lindgren will participate in Saturday's meeting. He has been bothered all year by a pulled Achilles tendon and has not been able to work out. |
