Show ASUU makes wise choice for committee The nomination Wednesday of three students to the President's Committee on Campus Security is a very sound and objective move by Associated Students of the University of Utah (ASUU) President Steve Gunn and Student-Faculty Board Chairman Jeff Fox. For once, students can be satisfied that their voice will be directly heard and respected by other committee members. The Chronicle commends Gunn, Fox and ASUU Executive Council for personally selecting the three students, rather than leaving the decision to President James C. Fletcher. Hopefully, this is the first of many such decisions which will more clearly define ASUU's independence of the administration. The Chronicle applauds the selection procedure used by Gunn and Fox. The appointments were made fairly and objectively, and above all, the selections include students won 3ft3 concerned with the security situation on this campus. The students-Dave Kilmer, Bruce Hancey and Jim Chutz-are all ise selections for the committee. All three represent able judgment and are able to accept the responsibilities ot the committee. They were chosen not because of political beliefs, not only because of former committee credentials, not because of any bias with the Department of Security, but because these three were regarded as the most likely to represent students I'ic 7 and responsibly when committee hearings are unde, .-.a. To select the three students on their own was a commendable move by Gunn and Fox. The, .lectK . procedures and the selections themselves also show-.d excellent foresight by student leaders. Each of the three students ,must now be approved or disapproved by President Fletcher. The Chron . ' whole-heartedly endorses the three nominations, and ures the administration and the Department of Security to alsv recognize the sincerity of the students to effectively investigate the University's Department of-Securky. |
