Show Double taxation without representation University students who live in the residence halls now pay twice to park in their own parking lots, or what is, in fact, their own "garage." j In need of answer are a few questions such as: Why was a ruling passed two years ago requiring all dormitory students to purchase a $7.50 parking sticker even if they do not intend to drive to classes? Why is this added fee not listed with other costs in the residence halls brochure? If dormitory lots are considered part of the campus, (as they are when it comes to dorm students buying a $7.50 parking sticker), why aren't they available to everyone with a parking sticker? Perhaps the traffic planning committee is unaware of its consistent rulings and the resulting "double taxation" of dormitory students. Double taxation results since room and board fees pay back the bond for construction of the dormitories, and this bond includes payment for construction of the parking lots. Payment of dorm fees is usually considered to include use of dorm facilities, i.e. parking lots. Non-residents who live in dorms must also purchase a non-resident sticker. Clearly, the parking sticker policy for dormitory students is inconsistent, and the Chronicle can, therefore, only recommend that a committee be formed to study this problem, and that further recommendations then be forthcoming. pj!
