Show Courses Available For High School Juniors High school juniors will be able to take University classes for college col-lege credit this summer. "This program is an outgrowth of the University's willingness to allow bright high school students to take courses on campus, and because be-cause more and more high school students are interested in making the summer count," said Franklin L. McKean, director of admissions. No New Procedure Letting high school students attend at-tend University classes is not a new procedure. "In the past we have had about 50 high school students on campus during the summer taking classes," Mr. McKean said, "but this is the first year we have established a standard program of admission." For a high school junior to be admitted, ad-mitted, he must be in the upper one-fourth of his class and be recommended rec-ommended by his high school principal prin-cipal or counselor. No Entrance Exams Entrance exams will not be required re-quired but placement tests will be needed to get into certain classes. "Students will be able to take any classes they are qualified academically aca-demically to," Mr. McKean said, "but we recommend they don't take classes that interfere with what they will be taking in their senior year, and encourage them to take classes not offered in high school, like geology, humanities or psychology." The high schoolers will be treated treat-ed as University students and will be entitled to many student privileges. priv-ileges. They will get college credit that may be applied toward graduation gradu-ation if they should enter the University Uni-versity as a regular student later on. Compete With U The classes they attend will be regular University classes, and they will compete with University students for grades. Thirty full tuition scholarships for the summer will be awarded. "Support - from high school principals prin-cipals and counselors has been very good," Mr. McKean said. Students interested in the program pro-gram should apply through their high school. |
