Show CHRONICLE MAILBOX Sacrifice The Unfair Draft i A. D.L Humbug Editor: As you know, instructions were recently issued by the Director of Selective Service to State Directors to end deferments for those who would, in the FaU of 1968, be first or second year graduate students (in fields other than medicine, dentistry dentis-try and allied medical specialties). The most recent study of the effect of these instructions, compiled by the Council of Graduate Schools, predicts that of first-year students, the schools will lose 66; of second-year students, 33. Campus dissent, since this announcement, an-nouncement, has centered on the discriminatory and unwise action of taking our country's scholars out of the university and sacrificing them on the battlefield for a war of questionable goals and negligible results, but their protests have missed the main point that the draft system itself is basically in- j equitable. It has been my belief since before I introduced, on March 14, 1967, legislation (S. 1275) to provide for early transition to a fully voluntary military manpower procurement system, that no amount of patching will fix a selective selec-tive service structure which is essentially unfair. As a student leader, you have probably seen the r growth of student apathy and disillusionment dis-illusionment on your campus. It ship in, a non-A.D.L. approved organization. or-ganization. Improve Rights The rest of the audience could go hang! The A.D.L. was going to use ALL the available time for character charac-ter assassination. Fortunately, it didn't quite work out that way. Due to Dr. Atea (the chairman) ruling out questions not dealing with the topics, and an obvious lack of audience support for Neo-Nazi techniques, the A.D.L. was eventually even-tually unable to proceed with "improving "im-proving the rights and liberties of all people in our nation." Heckling and attempted suppression suppres-sion of ideas has no place on a university uni-versity campus. I believe that the A.D.L. owes both Mr. Lilienthal and the University of Utah an apology. apolo-gy. Sadiq J. Alsaji Stop, Look and Listen seems to me that constructive involvement in-volvement is the cure for this alienation alien-ation and the draft dialogue is certainly cer-tainly a reason for students to j accept this cure. Therefore I would ask that you : encourage your fellow-students to send their suggestions and comments com-ments to the Senate Armed Ser- , vices Committee as well as to me. Mark O. Hatfield United States Senator ; Editor: What is "the other side of the coin" with the Anti-Defamation League (A.D.L J? Last week University Uni-versity students got a look at A.D.L.'s hidden side. Apparently the Anti-Defamation League considers con-siders it perfectly all right for themselves to use Nazi-like techniques, tech-niques, provided the cause is "true" (i.e. pro-Israel). Nazi Techniques This illuminating example of principles gone moldy occurred at historian Alfred M. Lilienthal's recent re-cent lecture, on the Arab-Israeli situation. At the start of the question-answer period two men who proudly identified themselves as officials of the A.D.L. jumped up and started to heckle Mr. Lilienthal. Lilien-thal. Did they conduct themselves properly prop-erly and challenge Mr. Lilienthal's ideas? No! They obviously felt that it is of far more importance to blacken character and impune motives. One of the A.D.L. persons went so far as to request that Mr. Lilienthal Lilien-thal immediately answer a lengthy series of character assassination questions as to his motives, financial finan-cial backing, and possible member- Editor : It's high time Utah drivers reviewed re-viewed the traffic laws of this state. It seems that they think they are the only ones with anywhere any-where to go just because they are behind the wheel of an automobile. A pedestrian takes his life in his marked by painted lines or is crossing cross-ing in line with the sidewalk at the end of the block, you must yield the right of way to such pedestrian unless there are traffic signals or a police officer directing traffic at that point."
