Tailback Ray Groth skirts around right end early in game against Arizona State. The Ute offense held a hot hand, scoring four touch downs but could not keep up with the Sun Devils in the 49-32 low in Ute Stadium. Sun Devils Race Past Utes By MIKE JACOBSEN Chronicle Sports Writer 20,260 football enthusiasts thrilled to one of the most exciting excit-ing contests ever played in Ute Stadium last Saturday. Arizona State came out the victor as they put on a fourth quarter surge to take the Redskins 49-32 in the Homecoming game. Collins Shines The Utah offense, held in check the entire season with the Arizona and New Mexico exceptions, came alive and matched the vaunted Sun Devil attack for three quarters quart-ers before slowing down. Sophomore Sopho-more Tim Collins, who was given his first starting call at quarterback, quarter-back, played exceptionally. He passed for 191 yards and two touchdowns, and ran 46 yards for another score. Collins showed uch poise, the ability to throw the bomb, and was able to move the team consistently, in his premier. Charlie Smith, who did not start for the first time in two years, came off the bench and played brilliantly. Charlie set a WAC record with a 100-yard kick-off return early in the fourth quarter as he danced down the left sideline side-line barely staying in bounds. He also netted 41 yards with some very hard running as he often picked up yardage after the initial ini-tial contact. Fowler Good In First Start Bill Fowler also earned a starting start-ing position at flanker, and he made two catches, one a 34-yard touchdown grab. Ray Groth started start-ed at tailback and displayed his speed with some nice off-tackle and around the end runs. "Speedy" Thomas had three receptions re-ceptions for 61 yards and one beautiful bomb for a touchdown. Jack Andrews and Ted Harper rounded out Utah's receivers with two catches each. Sun Devil Offense Awesome Arizona State unleashed an awesome offense with Ed Rose-borough Rose-borough picking apart the Ute secondary with 17 pass completions comple-tions for 242 yards, fullback Max Anderson rushing 116 yards, and sophomore halfback Larry Walton running for 125 yards. Rosebor-ough Rosebor-ough had the poise of a pro, and he had good offensive blocking to give him plenty of time to find receivers. Anderson, who has a great deal of speed, got off a 73-yard 73-yard run, and Walton, who was subbing for injured Art Malone, scored four touchdowns and was terrific! Curley Culp and Ron Pritchard were very impressive on defensive. Pritchard made numerous tackles and the only reason Culp didn't was Utah ran away from him (There were only two runs up the middle.) Culp made the interception, intercep-tion, which he ran for a touchdown, touch-down, that led to Utah's downfall Clean Gam The Utah players shovi& of class as they did not get alty called against them, andfttj consistently helped up ATlM Staters after they had tacfc them. The Sun Devils, too, pla; a clean game as they only 6V2 yards marked off aga them. But there was much p:. hitting. Utah's offense line player-haps player-haps it's best game as it opeisS up many holes for the backs, an! gave Collins ample time to pas; on most occasions.
