Show Notes From The Underground Is There a Tuition Alternative? By Gordon Irving The tuition issue has been beaten beat-en to death after three weeks of constant discussion. And yet, even after all the talk, who has suggested sug-gested a plausible alternative to the tuition increase? Even those who have said that more of the University's programs ought to , be cut haven't made any particularly particu-larly good specific suggestions. I myself am in favor of the tuition tui-tion increase, under the circumstances. circum-stances. $5.00 winter quarter and $5.00 more spring quarter is not all that much money. It seems impossible to me that an increase of $5.00 will force anyone out of school. I would like to hear from someone who actually will have to drop out next quarter because he can't get the $5.00. Good Alternative A possible alternative, tending to give the University long range financial relief would be the raising rais-ing of the admission standards of this institution and possibly the dropping of some of the low, low G.P.A. people currently in school. This course of action will of course be vehemently opposed by those who hold the belief that a college education is the right of every citizen of the state of Utah. Yet it would seem to me that in a state so crowded with students as Utah is, higher education is a privilege and not a right. Too many here abuse that privilege by attending the University for improper reasons. Yet I think the point is open to debate. I am not entirely sure but what higher education edu-cation is the right of everyone. We have all been skirting this possible solution to the University's Univer-sity's financial dilemmas, but everyone has been afraid to bring it into the open. The supposed right to a college education has been the sacred cow of the whole tuition battle. This is one sacred cow that ought to be sent to the slaughterhouse. So that the facts can be examined. Raising standards may be 'fet only viable solution to Utah higher high-er education's financial problems. The issue needs to be discussed. |
