Show Utah Makes A Comeback from the Spartans, 52-14. Once leading passer Terry Stone again filled the air full of balls, but to no avail for the Lobos. By BRUCE ROBERTS Chronicle Sports Editor The University of Utah showed that rugged conditioning pays off and came back with a devastating offensive attack in the second half to down Arizona, 33-29 in a Western Athletic Conference game. Coach Mike Giddings unleashed Jack Gehrke to quickly tame the Wildcats in a tremendous display of offensive talent. The Utes took an early opening lead, lost it several sev-eral times, but finally came out on top in a big second half surge. Gehrke did a fabulous job picking apart Arizona's staunch defense, throwing for three touchdown passes pass-es and coming up with several yards on the ground. Big Win It was a big win for the Utes who now are still in contention for a piece of the WAC championship, champion-ship, providing someone knocks off Wyoming. Utah stands 2-1 in conference con-ference play and 3-2 overall. Utah first scored on a pass from Gehrke to Jack Andrews, but then dropped the lead on a Wildcat touchdown and a field goal. Later in the second quarter, Andrews was open again in the end zone and Gehrke laid it in his hands for a 12-9 Utah lead. The Utes couldn't contain the hard-hitting Arizona crew though, and another touch- Leading 3-29 in the final minutes, Utah contained a desperate Arizona Ari-zona drive to hold on for the victory. vic-tory. Other Games The Utah-Arizona clash was the only WAC game on tap for the weekend. In a big intersectional clash, the University of Texas at El Paso wholloped 3YU, 47-17 in El Paso. Billy Stevens, the nations leading passer, picked the Cougar defense to shreds en route to BYU's worst loss since their Wyoming Wy-oming defeat last year. Arizona State kept alive its winning streak with a 31-20 win over Washington State in Spokane. The tremendous offensive push was too much for the Cougars, as the Sun Devils once again rolled up over 300 yards on the ground. Wyo. Does It Again Ninth ranked Wyoming again proved that their not a fluke, romping romp-ing to a 30-7 victory over Witchita in the Laramie Homecoming festivities. fes-tivities. Paul Toscano and Jim Kiicc combined for another big offensive performance, while Wyo's defense did their usual pulverizing of the opposing offense. Gehrke accounted for three touchdowns in the air. down gave the Wildcats a 16-12 edge at halftime. Things started looking bad for Utah again in the second half when Marc Reed piloted his offensie unit down to Utah territory and pushed push-ed across their third score of the game. Trailing 23-12, Utah strated a big surge behind Gehrke who hit Ray Groth, Jim Rees, and finally final-ly Charlie Smith, capping a 72 yard touchdown drive. Lawson Intercepts Jerome Lawson alertly picked off an Arizona aerial and ran the ball back to Arizona territory to set up Utah's fourth touchdown drive. The score came early in the fourth quarter as Charlie Smith swept around end on a two-yard drive. Lawson pulled off another big play in the final quarter, intercepting intercept-ing a Marc Reed pass and running it six yards for Utah's final score. Jim Whitely added the extra point and Utah led, 33-23. But Arizona wasn't through, and came right back behind Reed to score again on some big pass plays. |
