The Utah Region, Sports Cars Club of America, is one of nearly 100 regions within SCCA. The Region Re-gion sponsors slalom, obstacle races, rallys, autocroses, road racing and social events. SCCA is a voluntary organization. organiza-tion. It is devoted to the creed "Sportsmanship Demands Safe Driving." Safety in competition and on the street have high priority. Obstacle Slalom The obstacle slalom or gymnk-hanas gymnk-hanas is a course set up with rubber pylons. The drivers must run the course against a time clock without touching the pylons or deviating from the course. Rallys are a team event run on public roads at legal speeds. The teams consist of a driver and a navigator who cooperate to get from point A to point B in a precise amount of time. Driving skill in maintaining an average speed and navigational skill in keeping on course and on time are both required. Autocrosses, a mixture of road racing and an obstacle course racing, are high speed events. The drivers run one at a time on a large course. This race takes a whole weekend. Autocrosses are as close to road-racing as the nonlicense driver can come. Sports Competition Road racing is the event most people imagine when they think of sports car competition. This race is run on a closed, private course. The cars are classified by their performance factors. Drivers in road racing events are required to obtain special licenses. li-censes. The drivers must be 21 and must participate in driving skill and theory classes before he can receive a license. All SCCA events are on an amateur basis.
