Backfield Lineup In the backfield, it will be Utah's Ben Woodson, Charlie Smith, and Elwood Stewart versus ver-sus New Mexico's Carl Jackson, Carl Bradford, and Joe Casas. The battles between these running run-ning backs alone is worth the price of admission. , New Mexico has the bigger 1 team, both in the backfield and the line. Utah has the record and that all-important home 3 field advantage. ' Look for an exciting game. from defensive end to offensive tackle, earned the accolades of Utah Coach Giddings for his blocking. He will gain new respect re-spect from the Lobos, who ran around his end consistently in last year's game in Albuquerque. Albuquer-que. New Mexico won that one 13-10 with a fourth quarter field goal. In the team series since the beginning of the WAC Utah has won two games, lost one, and has tied one with the Lobos. Gehrke: Three Out of Four Hidden in the shadow of Arizona Ari-zona quarterback Mark Reed's fantastic last half performance was Utah's Jack Gehrke who played an excellent game. An unknown quality at the beginning begin-ning of the season, Gehrke has played three good games out of four Ute contests. (His only mediocre me-diocre game was the Wyoming game and everybody was mediocre medi-ocre in that one) . Against Arizona, Gehrke con- J nected on 11 of 21 passes and! two touchdowns. More importantly, import-antly, he passed for 121 yards. New Mexico started the season well by defeating Utah State, 17-9, in Albuquerque and Kansas State 26-6 in Kansas. Since then, UNM has lost four in a row. Surprise to Sports World One of these losses was an avalanche, 51-3, at the hands of Texas Western, a school that has been surprising the sports world for a couple of years. Last Saturday, B Y U made mincemeat of the Lobos, 33-6, in Albuquerque. The game was regionally televised tele-vised and more than a couple of Utah boosters have wondered out loud if the Lobo's poor showing will hurt the gate Saturday Sat-urday afternoon. It might, especially es-pecially the way Utah fans supported sup-ported the Ute-Washington State game a couple weeks ago. Only 20,000 fans came out. Lineup Intact Utah, despite injuries after last week's 24-19 victory 6ver Arizona, Ari-zona, has a pretty intact lineup ready for the Lobos. The linebackers line-backers will be Jim Whitely and Mike Hairston instead of regulars regu-lars Tom Hawkes and Pat Mc-Kissick. Mc-Kissick. Hawkes and McKissick are hurting and no wonder. Hawkes has a bad shoulder which he wrenched against Wyoming Wy-oming way back when. McKissick McKis-sick tore ligaments in his leg and will be out for the UNM game and maybe a couple more besides. Fanatical Spirit McKissick could be ready for Arizona State if the doctors give him an O.K. when they remove the cast Monday. Hopes are high for McKissick, who has an almost fanatical competitive spirit. Opposing coaches are Utah's Mike Giddings and UNM's Bill Weeks. Giddings, of course, is a coaching rookie and Weeks is a seasoned veteran. The difference of experience should make little difference. Already Coach Giddings has amassed a 3-1 record and has won the Utah fans over with his personality and coaching achievements. Hero Beady Hero of the Arizona game, Rich Tate, will be ready. He recovered one fumble, intercepted intercept-ed two U.A. passes, and saved the game by batting down a few crucial Arizona passes in the latter stages of the game. Tate was also WAC Back of the Week. Merlin Driggs, who has become be-come a terror since he moved |
