Show gilllllllllllilllillHIIIIIIIIII'IIIIHIIIIIIIIIIIHIIIIIIIIIII lllllilHIIIIHIIIIIIIIIIII Illlillll Illl!llllllllllllllil!lipig ' I The Bull Pen 1 By JOHN SCHULIAN You can overlook John Mooney's column in the Salt Lake Tribune yesterday morning. The big fella just forgot to give his loyal readers all the facts. THE WAY MOONEY sees it, "The Bullpen" of March 29 did nothing but berate local sports writers for underplaying Utah's Jerry Chambers. Said he, "The Utah Chronicle seems to have a feeling everyone but the University of Utah fell flat in boosting Chambers for all-America." That just 'ain't so, John. If you would have read the rest of the column, you would have seen that Utah Sports Information Director Harry James came in for more abuse, and deservedly so, than either you or your counterparts coun-terparts at the "Deseret News." Instead, you contented yourself with presenting a distorted view of that fateful column. EVEN THE QUOTE you used from that piece, while mangled miserably, comes through with a bit of the truth though you managed to overlook it. That quote, unaltered, read: "You can hem and haw, but it can all be traced back to our own happy little valley. The lame excuses flow and the 'we're sorries' abound, but the local sportswriters as well as University Sports Information Director Harry James are the guilty parties in the overlooking of Chambers as an all-American." IN YOUR VERSION, podnuh, Harry James' name was conveniently con-veniently omitted. But his title was somehow left in. Some of your more alert readers probably wondered how "The Bullpen" could have directed all its wrath at you poor abused sportswriters who are getting paid to give the public ALL the facts when it mentioned poor old Harry James, even indirectly. YOU WANT A sample of what Harry got, Mr. Mooney? Read this: "WHERE WAS Utah tub-thumper Harry James when this (Chambers being overlooked) was going on? "That's a good question. "WHEREVER he was, he wasn't touting the school's top eager. "Harry explained the Chambers situation by raising the old cry 'Chambers just came on too late.' "WHERE WERE you during the '64-'65 season when Chambers Cham-bers out-dueled the late, great Wayne Estes of Utah State, Harry? "You oughta remember that one. Chambers only missed one shot all night as he hit 15 of 16 from the field and seven of seven from the foul line for 37 points to pace the Redskins. "ADMIT IT, Harry, that game should have stamped Chambers as a prospective all-American. Ot least one worth getting a crummy brochure out on." And so on. IF YOU WOULD have been doing something besides trying to come out smelling like the proverbial rose, John, you would have let your readers see the rest of the column, or at least given them a sampling of the rest of it. Your column was supposed to clear the record on the oversight over-sight of Chambers. Your readers could have found out more about the situation if they'd read the " "" ' .,,,, County Record. NEXT TIME you bomb somebody's some-body's opinion, make sure you've 5 got all the facts right, big fella. pS!!!2s And make sure you give them a to your reaers- v& v n oter words, look before t Y you leap babv- |
