Show New Art Policy Aims To End Controversies Union Outlines Program For Hall, Corridor, Gallery By DAVID BRISCOE ChronicI Political Editor A new policy for the display of art in the Union Building was accepted unanimously by the Union Board yesterday. NO LONGER WILL THE scheduling of exhibits in the Union main corridor be under the direction of the Union Art Exhibits Committee, which is made up of students, Union personnel and representatives of the art department. The committee will, however, have sole responsibility for exhibits ex-hibits in the fourth floor corridor and in the Union Art Gallery. THE NEW GALLERY, being built on the Union first floor, should be ready by the beginning of winter quarter, according to Douglas Jensen, director of the Union. The Board's new policy was prepared by a subcommittee headed by Willard Mitchell, who is also chairman of Challenge Committee. The policy was formed because be-cause of the new gallery and because of the confusion and controversy which had arisen from certain displays in the main corridor. The latest "confusion" was in October when several nude paintings were deleted from a traveling exhibit which hung in the corridor. A FULL-SCALE controversy arose last year when a student exhibit, scheduled by the Art committee, was removed from the corridor because it contained paintings of nudes which were found "objectionable" by the Board of Regents. The new ruling says, Union Board "recognizes the continuing continu-ing importance of a program of artistic display throughout the building to foster appreciation of the arts in their various forms." It also says the Board is "cognizant of the divergent interests in-terests of the multiple publics that make use of the facility and recognizes a responsibility to those interests." Under the new policy, scheduling schedul-ing of the main corridor will be under the direction of the Union House Committee. THE PROVISION says that the area "may be used for educational edu-cational and cultural exhibits such as crafts, photography, science sci-ence and exhibits associated with a regularly scheduled program," which would include the upcoming upcom-ing Spotlight on France. The Board also "looks with favor on the establishment of a permanent Union Art collection" collec-tion" to be displayed throughout through-out the Union. The policy includes a recommendation recom-mendation that the Art Committee Commit-tee secure for the new Art Gallery Gal-lery "a wide variety of exhibits, shows and works of art from reputable and recognized artists and institutions." MITCHELL said this includes student art, which is selected by the art department for artistic quality and promise. |
