Show President Fletcher Goal Perfection James Chipman Fletcher, a physicist with a long and distinguished record in the administration of complex com-plex companies, will be inaugurated today as the eightn President of the University. ' Being at the top of any large university is tough. : To be rhe best, he must be both Republican and a Democrat,, Demo-crat,, for and against unions, but with no political bias at all. lie must be practical, God-fearing, socially attractive, attrac-tive, iatelligent, good natured, friendly, have high moral character and good judgment. And he must be a good scholar interested in all academic sections of . the school. A university president is not only the chief administrator. admin-istrator. He is also the head of the faculty, policy ' molder for the Regents, overseer of student body problems, prob-lems, and the official interpreter between the institution institu-tion and the general public. ... ,:. .. It is too early yet for in-depth evaluations of Pres. ' Fletcher's performance. But his qualities are already showing through. ; He meets often with various student groups to . keep abreast of student opinion and student problems. He circulates among the faculty and has visited many departments several times. He is working hard to con-...yj.nce con-...yj.nce the legislature of our monetary needs. .:,--::. Pres. Fletcher sees the University's main problem --ta.be largely financial but is determined to build our '. reputation starting now. He doesn't intend to whine to -. members of the Legislature about the lack of funds, . . b'u'f. we doubt he'll give up on them either. : : Pres. Fletcher has commented that people in the state don't realize the reputation our school carries in ' national academic circles. Perfection is his goal. "We want the best in dramatics, dra-matics, music, the arts, and athletics. And mainly the academic world." "Everything! depends on the faculty. I can't imag- . ine being satisfied with the University being second in anything." Perfection? That may be a far-off world. But before Pres. Fletcher leaves us, you can bet we'll be a lot closer to it. |
