Show Hindsight Helpful Though hindsight is not a very perceptive quality, it may have its merits in preventing further foolishness in the realm of campus architecture. "if. We are referring, of course, to the new business building. Besides the ail too common ringing of bells during class time, which we assume will be fixed, there is the inability of the air conditioning system to adjust to the proper temperature. What is more disheartening than making a 7 :45 class, then falling asleep in a class room with a thermostat reading of 89 L These are just technical adjustments, but may we ask when? Of course there are more serious problems, some of which cannot be alleviated, but whoever designs these buildings, or puts his approval on them, should have learned something by now. A good example is the congestion which occurs between classes. Too many people trying to get in end up fighting with too .many people trying to get out.' It seems that the problem which has occurred in Orson Spencer Hall (mob crowd conditions) would bring wider hallways on any new buildings used for class room purposes. The inadequate stairway system is another point of interest. Trying to hurry means instant crushing by the rest of the teem protoplasm which has the same idea. One other thing, whoever heard of two small entrances, en-trances, with one being used only occasionally, to a building that changes human personality once every hour? Could a suggestion be offered? Try making one door an "in" door and the other an "out" door. Despite the negative side of the new building, there are good features. Improvements over some old inadequacies inade-quacies such as the very good lighting facilities are a pleasure in contrast with Milton Bennion and OSH. The acoustics seem to be a great improvement over dissimilar characteristics in most other buildings. We hope that when future buildings are planned, some intelligent in-telligent steps will be taken to insure that mistakes of the past are not repeated. |
