Show Peace Prize Salute To King We join in congratulating Dr. Martin Luther King who has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in civil rights for Negroes in the United States. Dr. King is the 12th American to win the prize. Three Americans who have won it in our memory, Dr. Ralph Bunche, Dr. Linus Pauling, and now Dr. King have been figures of some controversy here in the United States at the time they received theaward. It would seem that a considerable part of the value of the award to the world is that with its tremendous prestige, pres-tige, it can vindicate the efforts of people who work I against general apathy or popular opinion for what they believe to be right or humane. The committee awarded the prize to Dr. King fully as much for the way in which he persued his aim as for the aim' which he pursued. The methods of non-violence he uses, which are modeled after Gandi, are criticized by Negro radicals as well as white bigots. Dr., King plans to use the $53,000 to further the" movement to give the Negro full equality in America; we cannot think of how the money could be better spent. |
