Show Money Misused Thm die Blazers Qaesti0: What do Executive Council meters have that ordinary people don't? Answer : $160 worth of Navy blue blazers, purchased with student funds. Once again .he Executive Council has fH money from the ASUU budge, to purchase seven uniforms for its members. Navy blue blazers are traditional for the Council but then, AWS has always worn red ones. However, the members of AWS now buy individually. Program Council has ordered olive green jackets which will be paid for from its members -own pockets. AMS was told last spring by Tom Clark, AbU u 'Usurer, that it could not use students funds to purchase blazers. ' Just what makes the Exec Council different from the above mentioned groups, and why should it spend $160 to ease the burden on its members' wardrobe budgets? Perhaps the only answer to the first question is that the Executive Council has the first, if not the last, say on the ASUU budget. Uniforms naturally designate officers apart from the rest of the student body. But are students willing to finance this new segregation? It would seem that $160 could be put to better use on this campus. For example, it could construct 40 parking spaces, rent the Union ballroom for two student dances; it could finance the Browsing Room Committee or the Special Events Committee for a full year; it would pay transportation costs from the West Coast for three speakers. The blazers ar.e good looking, and the council was impressive im-pressive on the stage with Governor Rockefeller and riding down Main treet in the Homecoming Parade. But, if the ASUU officers wish to stand out in a crowd, to be that well identified, let them purchase their status symbols with their own money, not student funds. |
