Show I Speak for Democracy By Sonja Dean I am democracy and I speak -'or my country. Listen to me very country who would go against me and destroy all that I stand for. Listen well, for I ' - . ."' '- : ' 4 ' Sonja Dean can tell you of many ways that I am the victor. Did you ever hear of a government gov-ernment of the people, by the people, and for the people? A Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Declaration of Independence? Indepen-dence? Yes, maybe somewhere in your faint history of my country you have run across these words. I stand for freedom. Show me one group of people as happy hap-py as mine. Show me a more industrial, religious, and progressive pro-gressive people as we live in America. Look at the gray skyline sky-line of New York, Los Angeles and Pittsburgh. These industrious indus-trious cities employ millions of people, yet these people are free. Free to work where they want, to and free to voice their " opinion. Who gave them the" right of free'iim? It wasn't a jountry that didn't believe in ireedom. No, it was won by he American people. They i!ought the bloody war of the Revolution and spilled their life blood on Bunker Hill to preserve my destiny. They fought the Civil War so that every man could be free. They fought the First and Second World Wars so that I could stand and say: America is free and will always be free as long as every American puts these goals before them: To strive to better their country, keep their standards high, and trust in God. Think of the lives given and the blood spilled by these Americans. America is their eternal monument. It stands for freedom and that is what they fought for. Let us go back into the centuries cen-turies and take the great leaders lead-ers and their downfalls. Let us take the counsel of the fallen mighty. Behold, Nebuchadnazzer, greatest of the Caledonian kings of Babylon, who because of conceit con-ceit and glory set up an image of himself and called upon the I people to worship it. But the . people rebelled and he was stricken from the throne. Behold, 1 Julius Caesar, so -dier, who gave the death blow to democracy in Rome. He died by the hand of assassins. Behold, Nero, emperor, per-secuter, per-secuter, destroyer, monster, whose name lives as a deadly insult from the tongues of those who love their ft How men. These are just a few who have tried to gain power, different dif-ferent in their ways, yes, but all with one idea: To become dictators over all their people. What was wrong with their idea? You can guess. The power of democracy was lacking. lack-ing. This was the one great thing they had not achieved. Freedom lives in the heart of every American citizen. It lives in the heart of a young . boy at church on a bright Sunday Sun-day morning praying for strength and freedom and giv-; giv-; ing thanks for the right to wor-, wor-, ship the way he sees fit. It lives in the face of the See DEAN, Back Page Here's More About Dean Continued from Page One r anchor. pn7in out on h'..- entile ent-ile as thoy graze in ihf gret-ti ii.elds. It lives in the heart of tiie crowd as they stand and sing the "Star Spangled Banner" Ban-ner" in the Fourth of July pro gram. Yes, democracy is their goal. They goal they strive to keep, ?nd democracy stands for free- lorn and freedom for America. What is democracy? Not only meat and drink, easy ways and i-'riendly freedom. It is a faith vhose roots are anchored in the heart of a man. Struggling io grow and striving through the ages. It is a faith that is bold, resolute reso-lute and strong. Now as it did years ago, calling out to the brave to hold their banners high and to fight and if they must to die. Remember the small band of Pilgrims on the coast of Plymouth, Ply-mouth, and the. pioneers who sang their songs to God, standing stand-ing before the church altar on a bright Sabbath morning. This freedom under God has echoed throughout the centuries. Behind them marched the settlers of the nation. Strong men, patient women, and brave children to till the soil and to build the towering cities. Yes, this is democracy as I understand it. It has been inherent in-herent in our great land. I received re-ceived it from my parents and I am obligated to pass it on to my progenitors. This being the case, democracy CANNOT and WILL NOT fail. |
