Show Ike Wins in Landslide, But Democrats Take Control of National Congress Dwighl D. Eisenhower was 4 reelected to the presidency of the United States in the general gen-eral election Tuesday, in a l landslide that confounded all Apolitical prognosticates, j As early as 10 o'clock MST, j it was apparent that he had j been reelected. i While Eisenhower and Nixon j were returned to the White I House, the Republicans los! j ground in the Senate and the House of Representatives, with the Democrats having a clear : j majority hi both houses. j Utah was one of the few states electing Republicans to both houses of Congress, and to all state offices, as well as giving the Republicans control of tile state Hou-e and Senate. In the Utah governor's race, George Clyde upset all the I dope to win a decisive victory J over Democrat Romney and Independent J. Bracken Lee. i Most observers tabbed Lee to ! draw enough Republican voles to defeat Clyde, and many said they ''don't expect Lee to win, but wouldn't be a bit surprised if he does." Lee was supported by many prominent Utahns, including Charles Steen of Moab, "Utah's uranium king." In Beaver County Carlyle Gronning, defeated in his bid for a seat in the national House, retains his (Democratic) seat in the Utah Senate, and Jack Mahoney, Ma-honey, Democrat, won over Karl Truman by' a scant 15 votes, 'for State Representative. Democrats were ' also elected to the county commission pots, with J. Frank Smith of Beaver and H. L. ToUey of Milford, both incumbents, winning reelection re-election in tight races. D..A. Symond, Milford physi- j cian, was elected to the Beaver County Board of Education, and Beaver County voters favored Roy E. Gibson, Nephi publisher, publish-er, for the State Board of Education Edu-cation post, but other counties in the district gave W. C. Cole of Delta a large majority, and he was elected to the post. |
