Show PHEANSANT POPULATION IS "UP" OVER STATE The annual fall census of pheasants throughout the state shows an average or greater number of birds on hand for the 1955 season, according to the Utah Department of Fish and Game. The department said pheasant pheas-ant brood counts are taken each year during the month of August to determine success of the spring hatch and early rearing period. This information informa-tion is then submitted to the Fish and Game Commission for that body's use in setting bag limits, length of season, and the various other regulations covering this hunt. The commission set the opening open-ing day of the annual pheasant hunt as Nov. 11 some two months ago to accommodate shooters wishing to plan ahead for this event. All other regulations reg-ulations will be set Sept. 23 and 24 during the fall quarterly quarter-ly meeting of the commission. Brood count totals this year show an average of 5.41 young birds per brood. This compares com-pares favorably with the 4.12 birds per brood counted during dur-ing 1954. A brood of five birds during this period of the year is considered normal and forecasts an average harvest during" the fall hunting season. TAG DEER-ELK AT KILL With several early deer and elk seasons soon to get under way," the .Department of Fish and Game today reminded sportsmen to tag their animal at the time of kill. Board of Big Game Control action again this year ruled that "All deer killed must be immediately tagged with the tag provided." The same regulation reg-ulation applies when hunting elk. The department asked that the tag be placed in the hock joint on the rear leg of the animal. |
