Today I my children are the recipients of your influence and I have smugly basked in memories of debates won while eagerly defending principles with the authoritative authori-tative rebuttal: "My teacher said so." LAST WEEK, I VISITED THE U. E. A. MEET, probably from a homesick desire of my youth to see again "my teacher." I am still shaking 3 at the ghastly message that was given at thai assembly: "Governor Lee is the worst enemy of education of all the governors in the nation." Please tell me, teacher that love of country, that thrill at the sight of Old Glory for which I was later to bleed helplessly on foreign soil was it worthwhile? This government it is still of the people, by the people and for the people, isn't it? THIS HIGH OFFICE OF STATE GOVERNOR You don't think such a person is our enemyl No, I'm sure I was mistaken, and yet the speaker said all governors are enemies of the schools and ours (our Utah Governor) is worst of all! And not one person in that group, not one teacher teach-er who should be leaching my child respect for the Constitution, for law, and for the governors of the land, made any attempt to defend the Constitution, Consti-tution, the law, the governor, or fair play. t AS KIDS, we referred to opposing schools as "rats" but you, my teacher, told me to do it to their faces on a competitive field and see who was the "best man" by the final score. I would never have considered hiring a foreign agent from a national source to do my name calling for me in the absence ab-sence of my opponent. You taught me fair play; was your lesson only from books and not intended to be an example? I REMEMBER A FEW LINES OF A POEM from my Sixth Grade lessons: "The same sun that saw the Sparlon shed his patriot blood in vain now beheld the soul of freedom . . . ." You finish it, teacher. Is this freedom: thai a person (I know not his name) can come into our realm and solicit the schools to his cause in selecting a governor? What is to prevent this agent from I soliciting your help in selecting our constable, or such agent ruling on who should be principal of your school? What credentials does, such an agent carry who would control our thoughts, and next our lives? BUT NOW TO THE GOVERNOR What has he done to uer. e the attention of this "hired agent"? 1. HE OPPOSED THE SETTING UP OF A SPECIAL BOARD OF EDUCATION, EDU-CATION, which removes the Superintendent of Public Instruction fr;m the public. Whether this is good or bad would be a problem for the teachers teach-ers to weigh. What are the facts of a bureau operation as compared to being accountable to the taxpayer? 2. THE SCHOOLS OF THIS STATE ARE FINANCED FROM SPECIAL TAX LEVIES. The present governor has instructed the school authorities authori-ties to stay within their budget. Is this objectionable? Should road, welfare, or other funds be added to the special school fund? If Yur budget is short ,is not this a problem for me and all other taxpayers through legislative action, and not a back-alley scrap with the highest official of our state by hired agents? 3. MY- INVESTIGATION, made since visiting the U. E. A. Meet, has pointed toward an administration for all people. As a disabled veteran, I the governor vetoed a bill giving me a Utah state income tax exemption. exemp-tion. Should I hire an "agent" to come into the state? Am I not Observing Ob-serving of special consideration as much as you? DEAR TEACHER, WOULD IT BE EXPECTING TOO MUCH TO ASK YOU TO GIVE THE SCHOOLS BACK TO THE TAXPAYER? Yours very truly, RICHARD L.
