Show Ingenuity clues new fall sportswear picture Evolution follows revolution, revolu-tion, and so it is for fall where a new breed of pants keys the total sportswear picture, pic-ture, with ingenuity. Now that tney are an accepted ac-cepted life style, pants are more reserved. It is for them that shirts, sweaters, vests, tunics, toppers, jumpers, skirts all the put-togethers, in fact are made. Because pants have become so basic, they aren't as off beat as they have been. Ultra-wide floppy legs are passe, pas-se, now. Legs are straighter, narrower and often boast cuffs. Pants fabrics depart from the wild side to favor old favorites instead. Solid wools, plaids, other fancies and corduroyboth cor-duroyboth waled and the new no-wale type are to be seen. Skirting the scene, one finds many moods from soft, soft to hard edge almost brash perkiness. Breezy flip pleated skirts vie with culotte skirts. Wraparounds contrast to soft dirndls. Each has its time, its place. It's all the look of fall sportswear and the preference is purely a personal choice. Sweaters Gain Favor Not since the 40's have sweaters enjoyed such a revival. re-vival. Big, important and with many looks is the cardigan. car-digan. It passes as a sweater, a tunic, a jacket, a short coat, a vest. Or even a special category cate-gory known as "below-the-knee." Cables, jersey and argyle patterns in all but classic color combinations are some of the ways of the sweater. It may be so short it stops at the waist or a long, lean pull that bags. The word on sweaters is they should be stretched long yet clingy. Blouses and shirts have the leaner look for fall. Along with skinny sleeves on some comes the complete opposite of full sleeves, controlled by tight cuffs, on others. Yokes, stitching, draping, pleats, pockets and embroidery embroi-dery are touches that make fall's blouses new. Jackets, Coats Vary Shirt-shirts are still in the picture. These are the true classics and they show up in all kinds of fabrics from cottons cot-tons and knits to rich crepes and tissue failles. To go over skirts, pants, sweaters, shirts and other components, casual coats and jackets come in a variety vari-ety of styles and lengths. There's a touch of tongue-in-cheek about the maxi coat, which swoops down to the ankles. More briefly put are the swingy topper and the cape. The safari jacket, the blazer, the blouson, the double-breasted double-breasted classic and the Napoleon-collared jacket present pre-sent other choices. Tunics, too, double as jackets. "Mixed Doubles" is a trend making sportswear inroads. This means short sleeves over long sleeves, tank tops over blouses and the layering of clothes. It's a fun business, with one's ingenuity being the rules of the game. Truth to tell, it is individuality individ-uality and ingenuity that is the whole secret of the fall sportswear picture. Versatility is synonymous with fall's new knits. Smartly detailed with embroidery, buttons, stripes, they : suit all tastes and occasions and can be worn by women of any age. Two-piece styles pictured are in woo double knit with, at left, mock-turtle collar and multi-color embroidery and, at right, two lone stripinp and double row of buttons. Both by Apollo. |
