Editor's note: The Chamber of Commerce beginning this week, plans to run a series of biographies on "Tho Business Man of the Week," to make the public better bet-ter acquainted with business people. The Chamber's selection selec-tion this week, is Bill Ruff. Bill Ruff, genial owner and manager of Ruff's Garage, started a small auto repair and welding business with his father, fa-ther, William E. Ruff, in 1940 on South Main by the underpass. under-pass. From that time the business bus-iness has grown and prospered until now it is located in a large building on West Center and employs five other mechanics mechan-ics and a bookkeeper. Bill was born In Schofield, where his father worked for the mine owners as a mechanic. Bill grew up, figuratively speaking, with grease on his coveralls and a wrench in his right hand and learned his trade from the older Mr. Ruff, master mechanic. The father was killed in 1950 while out on a welding job. The two mechanics, father and son, came to Springville in 1934 to work for W. W. Clyde whom they had known in Spring Canyon where Mr. Clyde was an engineer and went into business for themselves them-selves twenty-six years ago. Endowed with a keenly-developed sense of community service, BUI has always served in capacities of trust and honor hon-or including city councilman, Springville Fire Chief; director, Chamber of Commerce; charter Bill Ruff member, Springville Jaycees and Lions Club; chairman, West Fields Hunting Unit for five years while the project was the purchase and development develop-ment of North Park. He served as recreational chairman on the Committee for Children and Youth for several terms. He is a past president of the Utah State Firemen's Association Associa-tion and is presently representing represent-ing that organization in the capacity ca-pacity of advisor at the Utah Trade Technical Institute in Provo in its safety and fire control program. Bill is a director on the Four Seasons board. Though the intricate workings work-ings of the internal combustion engine hold no fear for Bill, the keeping of books is another matter. The weighty problem he always finds time to enjoy the thing which has played an important part in his life: sports. An avid fan of all types of ball games, Bill is an ardent ar-dent booster and has sponsored sponsor-ed many types of local teams. His own latest conquests in the field of sports are bowling and golf. "I'll be glad to see the new Hobble Creek Golf Course ready for play. It's got to be one of the most beautifully located lo-cated courses in the country!" Bill says. The Chamber of Commerce salutes Bill Ruff, busiiness man who has nothing to sell but Grade A Service; who finds time to give of himself to worthy community and civic projects; whose love of sports has kept him young and gives others the opportunity to participate par-ticipate in sports activities; whose sincere dedication to his family and his church makes him truly an American citizen, first class. of keeping records and accounts he turns over to his good wife, Gertie Cowley Ruff. She keeps the business running like Bill tunes up a motor, "humming". Her other titles she laughingly reports are "parts chaser" and "general flunkie". Together the Ruff family serves its church with a sincere and dedicated devotion; Bill as counselor in the Eighth Ward bishopric and Gertie as Springville Spring-ville Stake Relief Society president. presi-dent.
