Show Citizen recalls anniversary of Indian battle It was just 100 years ago Sunday, (June 26, 1966) that a band of Indians came down Maple Canyon driving off some 50 head of herses and 20 head of cattle belonging to the early settlers. It was in commemoration commemor-ation of the ensuing battle between be-tween the white settlers and the Indians, that the present marker was placed near Palmyra Pal-myra Park, a Mapleton citizen recalled this week. It was a hard fought battle in which the Indian Chief Black Hawk, who had instigated instigat-ed so much trouble for the settlers, set-tlers, lost his life. It was reported re-ported also that eight Indians were wounded or killed and there were two white settlers by the name of Dimmick and Edmundson who lost their lives and were buried with military honors. The fight on the Diamond ended with the whites as the victors, history records, and it was also the end of Indian hostilities hos-tilities in the vicinity. |
