Show Twelfth Ward enters all-church after winning division tourney Ten individual trophies were . presented the "best'' of the tournament players including Jay Jensen of Mapieton, Paul Clyde, Springville Tenth; Tom Alvey, Springville Twelfth; Ken Abel, Springville Eighth; Steven Strong, Springville 5th; Jack Swenson, Spanish Second; Don Cottel, Payson Fifth; Dennis Den-nis Dixon, Payson First; F. Herbert, Payson Park, and J. Nelson, Spanish First. The sportsmanship trophy award was presented by Springville Banking Company, by George Bird to the Spanish Fork Second Ward. Coach of the Twelfth Ward was recipient recip-ient of the best coach award. He is David Richards. However, How-ever, DelMoine Christensen, bishop bi-shop of the ward and George Bird, counselor and former M Men all-star, assisted as coaches coach-es during the meet. Twelfth defeated Payson Park for the title, 54-50. Three other teams from Springville and Kolob stakes were represented in the finals, though each of these clubs lost out in the final night's play. Fifth lost to Spanish Fork First in the consolation finals, 61-51. Eighth took it on the chin 71-46 from Spanish Fork Second in the Third and Sixth place contest ,and Mapieton dropped the Fourth and Seventh Sev-enth place battle to Payson Fifth 59-41. Plays consistently Twelfth played consistent ball in winning their first division di-vision championship. In their opening contest, they won over Fillmore, 57-42. Their second victim was Lake Shore whom they defeated 67-57 prior to turning back the strong Spanish Span-ish Fork Second ward in the semi-final game, 62-47 in a brilliant display of offensive and defensive strength. Young and Alvey were sensational in their shooting in this contest. In the championship game, which was somewhat of an erratic er-ratic ijntest, the winner had to come from behind to overtake over-take The hard-worl ing Payson club and go out in front in the last quarter of the game. Killpack carried the brunt of the scoring and playmaking throughout three quarters of the contest before Alvey and Young hit their stride for the gam-,? n ice. Awards presented Benny Killpack won the most valuable player award during the meet and Joe Worthen Wor-then of Payson Park was given giv-en the best player trophy. |
