Show Ladies Literary Club entertained Mrs. Claude A. Smith entertained en-tertained members of the Ladies La-dies Literary Club at her home Thursday evening, with the club president, Mrs. Paul Thorn conducting. The topic for the evening was Panama, with Mrs. William Wil-liam H. Brown giving the paper pa-per on developments in the republic re-public from the time of the recent riots to the present. She also gave data on the historical background of the country and the canal and explained reasons, rea-sons, as noted by various columnists, col-umnists, for the uprisings. Some sources have indicated the canal should be turned over ov-er to the Republic of Panama. It cost the US $375 million to build and they pay $1.9 million annual rent for the zone area. Mrs. Thorn conducted short business announcing the Parade Pa-rade of Music program, Feb. 7, and the next meeting, Feb. 6, with Mrs. E. T. Crandall. Mrs. G. Lowry Anderson will give the program. A nicely arranged lunch was served by the hostess, assisted as-sisted by Mrs. Waldo Jackson, who was also a guest. |
