The squad competed in its first two major tournaments of the season this past month, with both a great success. The first tournament was at Provo High School Nov. 18 and 19. Though the competition was fierce, CHS performed extremely well. In cross examination debate, the team of Dan Jones and Joe Hoagland broke into quarterfinals after five preliminary rounds. In the quarterfinal quar-terfinal round, CHS went up against the top senior varsity team in the state. CHS lost the round; the final decision was 2-1 in favor of the Bingham team. The second tournament was in Salt Lake City, at East High School, Dec. 3 and 4. Jamie Swingholm took first place in legislative forum, the first person at CHS to ever receive such an award. She was given straight superiors in both her sessions. Diana Ready, a senior at CHS advanced to quarterfinal rounds in Lincoln-Douglas debate with a preliminary record of 5-1 and high speaker points. She is expected to do very well for CHS this year. In cross examination debate, the team of Ron Messerly and Sonya Smith advanced all the way to octa-final rounds, with a record of 5-1. |
