Show Upward Bound program continues CEDAR CITY The second year lor the on-the-job training program continues for participants in Upward Bound at Southern Utah State College. Job Site Coordinator Barbara Starr told the Record that this is the second year for Upward Bound students to participate par-ticipate in the summer internship component program. Starr explained that in the morning students attend classes in reading, science, math and English, but in the afternoons, the students work at different sites that are individually selected to coincide with the students' career aspirations. Starr has arranged several different sites the Upward Bound students could work at. Some of the different sites and jobs that the students could be involved in include; in-clude; SUSC Library, Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallary, housing department, local veterinarians, computer programming, botany projects, Utah Shakespearean Festival and mechanics. The various apprenticeships ap-prenticeships are being funded primarily by CETA funds, but if the students do not qualify for that funding, then they are just working for the experience, according ac-cording to Starr. Upward Bound is a federally-funded program which was established to generate skills and motivation necessry for success in education beyond high school for economically disadvantaged youth and students from families that are first generation ; college students which j are between the ages of 14 I to 17. j The 61 students in- volved -with Upward i Bound come from the Cedar City area, the : Richfield area and from Arizona. j The six-week program ; will conclude with a trip to Salt Lake City j |
