Show Jones tabbed top athlete PAROWAN - Watching Wat-ching Mike Jones of Parowan High School's basketball team shoot, you'd wonder how he could ever score. But the 6-3 senior Ram forward, even with his unconventional shooting form, manages to score a whole bunch. He breaks into double figures most every game, and that consistency may make it easy to overlook him. But his latest outing, a 35-point, 19-rebound explosion against Virgin Valley cannot be overlooked. Mike has earned The Iron County Record's Athlete of the Week award for the week ending Jan. 31. PHS coach Ralph Riggs has been hurt at times by the inconsistency of his underclass-laden lineup. But he can usually count on Jones game in and game out to score well and hit the boards hard. The Ram floor leader is looked to in clutch i situations also. His big bucket with just seven seconds left against Gunnison seemed to win that game for the Rams. Not only did Jones calmly put in a 10-footer to tie the game, but he was fouled on the play. Over two minutes later, after a pair o of time outs had been called, Jones put in the free throw to place the Rams ahead. His outstanding effort against the Mesquite, Nev., school included 17 field goals. Had he hit more than one of his five free throw attempts there, his score would have soared into the high 30s. |
